Serenity is in the running, or maybe The Dark Knight(assuming super hero films are sci-fi), the performance of Heath Ledger is great.

The Matrix.

Some people will claim that's really a trilogy, but I like to pretend parts 2 and 3 don't exist.

I own all three Matrix movies, but I only re-watch the first. :)

If I were to pick one though... Star Trek First Contact... or Avengers. They're not really parts of series, since they're fairly stand-alone films...

Yeah, Star Trek.

Silent Running, mainly because its the first SciFi movie I remember seeing.

For a series, I have a real thing for the Ghost In The Shell series of movies

I just saw that a couple weeks ago. :D It was... really, really bad. Especially the "science". But definitely a fun watch. :)

(I mean, going in you know a movie about Nazis on the moon is going to be a bad movie. :D )

Good call - there's a dirty and nasty edge to this one that sets it apart from the others.

Firefly is far and away the greatest piece of science fiction ever created. Its basically a work of art. Though that's a TV show....so...

Probably Prometheus.

Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, the LotR movies and Alien/Aliens would all be in there, along with the Matrix of course....

AND I HAVE to agree with your taste and every single mention of movies you gave and mythos behind them there, Balok...all phenomenal and all very outstanding, and my own personal favorites

YES and YES!!! I feel the same way, although I will admit the second one wasn't terrible, per-se, it just marked a deviation from what could have been a whole and complete storyline in and of itself.

The storyline really paralleled The Chronicles of Thomas Covenent the Unbeliber, in that he spends 3/4 of the time doubting and believing that it isn't real, and then in the last 1/4 he is ready to give his life to protect what he felt wasn't real but now loves.... And that is when the ass-kicking begins!

They really could have drug the whole ploy from the first movie across the trilogy in the same fashion that the abovementioned books did. Or left well enough alone and kept the Matrix a standalone piece. The Animatrix was a good compliment as well.

Some people believe that the Matrix is real and we're in it, and the Waichovski Bros are trying to tell everybody that. I think the whole Ilsa Strixx and sex change operation blew a hole in THAT conspiracy theory, eh? It was almost plausible at that point. Plausible to the level that we could have enlisted the help of the Myth Busters for that one!
