So many to consider, but for me it is Pat Benetar. Not by a large margin though. The other super close front runners are Amy Lee and Alanis Morissette, in my book.

What about Janis Joplin? her range of vocals is outstanding. Iv'e heard her go from raspy to crystal clear. I've always considered her to be the best female singer of all time.

Beth Ditto can definitely belt it out. Heavy Cross usually ends up on my work play list.

It's weird, there is real delineation in my collection. Female singers more in the pop/electronica and male more in rock/metal etc. I guess my favourite female rock singer would by Brody Dalle back from The Distillers through to her solo work. Recently saw her supporting the NIN/QOTSA tour and she didn't disappoint.

Given she's from my home town (literally and just Boston) she her band was all rage in the late 70's early 80's
